Maha Meru vs Sri Yantra: The Difference & Which to Choose
5 min read · Updated 2026-07-10
Buyers often assume the Sri Yantra and the Maha Meru are two different objects. They are not — they are two forms of the same thing. Understanding the relationship makes choosing between them straightforward.
The Sri Yantra: the flat diagram
The Sri Yantra, or Sri Chakra, is the two-dimensional figure of nine interlocking triangles radiating from a central point (the bindu), surrounded by lotus petals and a square enclosure with four gateways. In the Sri Vidya tradition it is the diagrammatic body of the Goddess. Etched on a copper plate, it is the classic wall or altar form.

The Maha Meru: the diagram raised
The Maha Meru (or Sri Meru) is the Sri Yantra lifted off the plane into three dimensions — a stepped, tapering mountain in which each tier corresponds to an enclosure (avarana) of the flat diagram, rising to the bindu at the summit. It is named for Mount Meru, the mythic axis of the cosmos. It stands upright on an altar rather than lying flat.

Which should you choose?
- Choose a flat Sri Yantra plate for a wall, a compact home altar, a pocket/pendant form, or a first purchase.
- Choose a 3D Maha Meru for a principal home altar, a pooja room centrepiece, or a business — it is regarded as the fuller, more potent embodiment.
- For daily japa on the go, a Sri Yantra pendant carries the same geometry against the body.

Frequently Asked
- Is the Maha Meru the same as the Sri Yantra?
- Yes — they encode the identical sacred geometry. The Sri Yantra is the flat diagram; the Maha Meru is that diagram raised into three dimensions.
- Which is more powerful, Sri Yantra or Maha Meru?
- In tradition the 3D Maha Meru is considered the more complete and powerful form, but a precisely made flat Sri Yantra is fully valid — geometric accuracy matters more than dimension.
- Should a beginner buy a flat plate or a 3D Meru?
- A flat copper Sri Yantra plate is the usual first purchase for a wall or small altar. A 3D Maha Meru suits a principal altar or business.
- What makes a Sri Yantra or Meru authentic?
- Rekha-true geometry — the nine triangles intersecting at the correct points — plus a stated material and, for metal Merus, a disclosed alloy.
