How to Place a Sri Yantra at Home: Direction, Rules & Mantra
7 min read · Updated 2026-07-10
The Sri Yantra (Sri Chakra) is regarded in the Sri Vidya tradition as the geometric body of the Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari — the most revered of all yantras. Where you place it, and how you first activate it, are treated as part of what makes it 'live' rather than merely hang on a wall.
The best direction and placement
- Corner: the north-east (Ishanya) of the home is the traditional sacred zone and the preferred spot for the altar.
- Facing: position it so that you sit facing east or north while worshipping. East is linked to new beginnings, north to wealth (the direction of Kubera).
- Height: raise it to about eye level when you are seated — never place a Sri Yantra directly on the floor.
- Surround: keep the area clean, uncluttered and away from bathrooms, shoe racks and the head of a bed.

Activating the yantra (prana-pratishtha)
A yantra is traditionally 'installed' before its first worship. A simple householder version of the rite is:
- Cleanse the yantra with clean water, then a light wipe of raw milk, then water again, and dry it.
- Place it on the altar in the direction above, on a clean red or yellow cloth.
- Light a lamp and incense, offer a flower and a little kumkum or sandalwood.
- Recite the Sri Yantra mantra — 'Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Shreem Hreem Shreem Om Mahalakshmyai Namah' — traditionally 108 times.
- Thereafter, a daily lamp and a few rounds of the mantra keep the practice alive.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Placing it on the floor or below waist height.
- Facing the worshipper south while worshipping.
- Keeping it in a bedroom used mainly for sleep, a bathroom wall, or a dusty shelf.
- Never activating it — many people treat a Sri Yantra as décor and wonder why it feels inert.
Which Sri Yantra should you choose?
For a wall or a compact altar, a Rekha-true copper plate is the classic choice. For a principal home altar or a business, a three-dimensional Maha Meru in Panchaloha is considered the most complete form. The geometry — the precision of the nine interlocking triangles (the Rekhas) — matters more than size.

Frequently Asked
- Which direction should a Sri Yantra face at home?
- Place it so you sit facing east or north while worshipping, ideally in the north-east corner of the home, raised to eye level.
- Can I keep a Sri Yantra without doing puja?
- You can, but in tradition an un-activated, un-worshipped yantra is considered inert. A one-time activation and a simple daily lamp are what make it a living focus.
- Where should you not keep a Sri Yantra?
- Avoid the floor, bathroom walls, shoe areas, cluttered shelves, and positions that make you face south during worship.
- Copper plate or 3D Meru — which is better?
- A copper plate suits a wall or small altar; a 3D Maha Meru is considered the more complete form for a principal altar or business. Geometric precision matters more than size.
